Who is hiding my job market?

You read or hear everywhere people talking about the hidden job market. Are you already familiar with the topic?
There is a general statement that says that only 20% to 30% of jobs are advertised on job ads (job portals, recruiters or company pages, press). It is known as the open market. The rest is called the hidden market.

Have you ever wondered why?
Have you ever asked yourself who is hiding these 0.8 of your future job?

Here is a little and visual explanation about a standard recruiting process in private companies that will show you were they hide.

Do you understand why 80% of people seeking employment apply only on the open market?
I don’t.
Well, to be honest, in fact, I do: it does look easier and does not require a lot of preparation.

As a consequence, there is for these open advertised positions, a lot of competition and your CV is likely to be 1 amongst hundreds.
Not only it need to be excellent but, if you want to be picked, you need to be this very rare bird: you know the one with a Phd in Molecular Life Sciences, speaking 5 languages including Japanese, having 5 years commercial experience in south Africa and knowing Linus, unix and Java.
Do not expect, in that process, that anybody is going to look to your transferable skills….

The hidden market is, on the other side, more diffuse and more difficult to identify than the open one.
There are 2 ways to approach the hidden market:

  1. Networking
  2. Spontaneous job applications, which without the having a right connection to a decision maker won’t bring much: back to way number 1.

Going back to the initial question  Who is hiding my job market? “, I believe the answer is now obvious: your network!
